How to Obtain a Premises Licence in the UK: A Simple Guide for Event Organisers

So you’re thinking of opening your own venue. You’ve found the perfect premises and now it’s time to start looking into a premises licence, but starting the application process feels really overwhelming. Who do you speak to and where do you start? Why do you even need a premises licence?

We know how daunting setting up a new venue can be because we’ve done it ourselves! That’s why here at Good Show we’ve put together a simple, straightforward guide to help break it down.

What is a Premises License, and Why Do You Need It?

A premises licence allows specific activities to take place at a fixed location. These activities include:

  • Selling or supplying alcohol
  • Hosting live or recorded music performances
  • Dance performances or indoor sports
  • Screening films or staging plays
  • Serving hot food or drinks between 11pm and 5am

Operating without a premises licence puts you at risk of fines, imprisonment or both.

How to Apply for a Premises Licence

  • Start Your Application Online
  • Visit the GOV.UK website or your local council's site to access the application portal.

Before applying, ensure you have:

  • A detailed premises plan (showing boundaries, access points, and safety equipment)
  • An operating schedule (outlining activities, hours, and safety measures)
  • Proof of your right to work in the UK
  • A consent form from the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) if alcohol sales are included.

Pay the Fee

Fees range from £100 to £1,905, depending on your venue's rateable value. You can find out a property’s estimated rateable value here.

Submit Your Application

Send your application via the online portal. Once your application has been submitted you will need to the following next steps:

  • Display a public notice at your venue for 28 days.
  • Publish a notice in a local newspaper within 10 working days.

What Happens Next?

After submission, a 28-day consultation period begins. During this time, local authorities and the public can raise objections. If no objections are made, your licence will likely be granted on the 29th day. If objections arise, a hearing may extend the process by several weeks.

In total, applying for a premises licence can take 1-3 months, depending on complexity.

Tips for Success

Prepare a Clear Premises Plan - Your plan should be to scale (usually 1:100) and include all relevant details, such as:

  • Boundaries, entrances, and exits
  • Areas for licensable activities
  • Safety equipment and fire exits

Be Transparent

Clearly outline how your venue will promote safety, prevent crime, and minimise public nuisance.

Understand the Rules

Licences are tied to the property, not the individual. If you're unsure about your responsibilities, consult your local licensing authority for guidance.
